1. Introduction to your project

The brief for this first semester was to create a Documentary of a person based in Greenwich, so the first step was to meet as a group and form an idea. We started to brainstorm and think of some initial ideas, the one that instantly struck the group as interesting was to interview a foreign student: talk about their journey into the UK, the reasons for why they moved and what it was like trying to fit in to a new society. This was also a realistic choice as especially during the COVID-19 pandemic it may be difficult to film a documentary on a shop in the local hughstreet as they will be the first to close in a national lockdown. We took this into consideration and was one of the main reasons for our decision to base our idea on a student, it was also important that they live fairly nearby so that we would have even greater access and more opportunity to film on multiple occasions and/or for longer periods of time as they would not be wasting their day travelling to our chosen set.

The contributor we selected (Yannek) fit our requirements and after discussing the finer points of his story with him, we realised that his story was highly emotional and the main part of our film would have to hit the audience emotionally and really make them feel for what he was going through.
